Dahlia & Thyme

Studio Florals

My Love of flowers began early in my childhood. Mum was a keen gardener with a fabulous green thumb. Despite living ocean side with tough coastal conditions our gardens were abundant. Mum had a special love of the humble Dahlia and it's here my passion began. After starting with a local florist early on, life would take me in search of other opportunities and interests, however flowers were never far from my hands or heart. In 2015 Our Dear Mum was diagnosed with Dementia. On a steep learning curve to find a medium that would create a continued sense of connection, peace and memories, a return to my love of flowers began. So it's here the seeds of Dahlia and Thyme were born.   Now seeing flowers as so much more than just beauty, flowers have continued to offer a meaningful sense of connection through memories, colour, texture and calm throughout Mum's Dementia Journey. Dahlia and Thyme is a reminder everyday that beauty is everywhere.  We should wherever possible take a moment to see it and share it.   We would love to deliver your next bouquet, arrangement, corporate piece or special occasion flowers. We take pride in providing personalised service from our home-based studio.

Autumn is one of my favourite times of the year with the cooler start to the days and the promise of a new season. From a Florists point we see the arrival of beautiful autumnal hues with rich reds, golds and greens. This presents us the opportunity for showcasing new use of colour, movement and textures in our work.

With Easter falling later this year (Good Friday falling on April 15th through to Easter Monday on the 18th April), it feels like a great time to talk about popular florals to celebrate the upcoming Easter break.

For many of us, we will no doubt continue to embrace the freedom of Easter celebrations with family and friends near and far.  Whether you're sending a beautiful bunch of blooms to someone special or enhancing your home, here are four popular and traditional choices to consider.

  •  If flowers are arranged in florist's foam, top up with clean water daily taking care not to overfill the container.

  • If  you have received cut flowers, trim the stems on a diagonal about 2cm from the base prior to placing in clean water.

  • Take special care to remove all leaves below the water line, as they contain bacteria that may proliferate and spoil the clean water.

  • Take care to position your flowers away from draughts, direct heat and sunlight.  Do not place flowers on heat generating appliances such as TV'S or microwaves.

  • As some flowers last longer than others, be sure to remove all spent blooms especially if other blooms are still in good condition.

  • Following these care instructions will help to prolong the life of your beautiful blooms.
